I had a dream in May of '98 that I died in an auto accident on Oct 10,99. A woman that does dreamwork with me worked this dream with me over a long period of time and I learned a lot from it. I understand death in dreams to be about transformation, about a type of psychic death..that, indeed a part of us is ready to die away, to make room for something different to come in. Perhaps thinking of the experience as a begiining to a death/rebirth period in your life may awaken you to new experiences.
