Without knowing the details of your friend's story I would need to ask how old he is. Reason being is that this dream sounds like an initiation dream. We understand so little about this need in modern times yet the Psyche craves such a rite of passage.
The most important issue here is that the dream not be taken literally. This is about a mythic struggle occuring in his mind about the need to destroy ties to the past. Afterall, all the victims were male and the outdated masculine must die.
