Yes I have both heard of this and heard it myself. This dream happened last August to me.
It was early morning. Maybe around 4:00 a.m. I had been sleeping and dreaming soundly. Suddenly the loudest sound I had ever heard fired off in my head. The explosion ripped through my skull. Its force jolted me awake. My heart was racing. I grabbed my arm to see if I was still alive. Certainly no one could live through such auditory magnitude. It was that moment when I realized that the explosion I had just survived was the sound that happens immediately after a person dies. (As I enter this into the computer a song's refrain on the radio goes "Are you born yet. Are you born yet."
And then after reading your dream I once again had this snap like a monster plastic spoon breaking.
I don,t think it has to do with too many drugs, aren,t they always to blame? But rather the explosion of internal material. Think fireworks or the sound of geologic change, like when a mountain breaks the surface
