Good question. I am loathe to assign him/it/her location or identity but there seems to be autonomy to its character.
I wonder if there is not an energetic wave breaking through time and space to which human consciousness has access. Dr. John Lilly called it the leaky mind. We can receive information from this energy wave if our individual band width is clear and wide enough.
Hillman takes about the images populating our dreams as Eidola, the Greek word for images.
I have had occassion to hear a voice as well. Joe Simpson in his book Touching the Void also is instructed by this voice. "Schizophrenics" hear voices as well.
I would like to be fanciful and speculate like certain Zen masters, that we are the dream of the Dreamer and that when he she it awakens reality as we know it is over. But...
So I abide the mystery, use the term Dreamer to suggest an certain autonomy to the dream experience and listen/watch carefully for more info.
